Artisit's Style - Beatrix Curran - Marrickville

Of course when you attend a group show there is always going to be a group of artists in attendance; yes that's just the way it works. I made this lovely portrait of Beatrix (with her art) at the "The Sausage Show" which is on now at 55 Sydenham Rd gallery... Something I have noticed over the years of making portraits of Artists at their openings is that they are more often that not, dressed in a way that is coordinated with their art; I love that! It's certainly happening in this portrait of Beatrix and it's also happening in the portrait I made of Jakob at the same show. What do you think? Or am I just imagining it all.. I will leave the decision up to you.

Near Central - Blue Satin and Twiggy's Eyes..

I love this look, the crushed blue satin shirt teamed with a leather skirt and black-chunky double buckle ankle boots. And then there's the make-up; red lips and Twiggy style eyes, a bit of retro chic all set for a night of art hopping in Surry Hills.

Artist's Style - Jakob Neulinger - 55 Sydenham Rd

When I met Jakob on Friday evening at "The Sausage Show" (no I don't know why they called it that) the first thing I said to him was "a man can't have too many candy stripe business shirts"  and I think this Austrian Artist 'now showing' at 55 Sydenham Road gallery was in full and total agreement!

Curiously I spotted a well suited business man on the train to Kings Cross earlier that day, pink shirt, pink candy stripe socks! I could be the new thing for men..

Ça va Gallery 8 - To The Outside In.

I have been wondering whether to show these street fashion shots or not for the past two days. I certainly like them though I am thinking they are a bit too close to night-out party-shots which is certainly not the idea behind them! Ça va are they street fashion? Well considering the title of the exhibition perhaps they are just right - To The Outside In; a lovely little group photography show is on now at Gallery 8 until the 3rd of March and some of the last nights of the Australian Summer..

Ben Quilty: After Afghanistan art opening NAS 2013

What can one say about this show other than even in a very crowded room, Ben Quilty's portraits of  the Men and Women serving in Afghanistan are truly moving. If you are not familiar with Ben's work you may be quite surprised to see and to experience how his bold and economical brush strokes reveal so much of his subjects; of course Street Fashion Sydney is not an art review; just a prompt to help get you over to the National Art School to see the show, an artist at the top of his form and our Nation at war, we still are..

And absolutely everyone who was anyone and quite a few beside was in attendance at the opening, I decided against photographing the politicians and actors and just stick to what Street Fashion Sydney does best, people wearing clothes! Here they are, there were as you can imagine; what with such a huge crowd a LOT of fabulous outfits, I kept it down to those that gravitated over my way - art lovers, art students, and even quite unintentionally Ben's uncles who informed me about Ben's suit, which I loved by the way...

Mark Drew - Converse Needs You - Dem Nutz!!

I spent yet another very pleasant Friday evening up at China Heights Gallery, this time it was the turn of gallery founder Mark Drew to show his new work - 'DEEZ NUTZ' a fusion of 'Peanuts' comic strips and Old Skool Rap lyrics, both of which have been influential in shaping the Mark Drew of today.. Or at least that's kind of how I took the show and I took the idea to heart for my portrait of Mark below where, taking the cue from Charlie Brown's or is it Marks thought bubble I have swapped/fussed Charlie and Mark's heads; now I'll never be part of the crew!!! Perhaps that's part of the story too..

And of course lots of cool people in cool gear, a cross section of Sydney Style, as always, and damn it I did miss getting a shot of a fabulous flowing-print-pants-suit teamed with a cut-away sandal/shoe styled after a golf shoe that I was going to team with Kayla's 'golf' boot/shoe below. Which kind of brings me to the last shot in this fashion post; the hideous Converse Campaign that was jumping out at me yesterday at every turn. What advertising Numm Nut says sneakers when they can say Converse instead! (yeah I get that they are making cool by not naming the brand, so what!) Mark; the sneaker game needs you; maybe this time we can go along for the ride together!

Anyway, shoes are not boring and and only losers wear socks pulled up like that in Australia - great job on the local research Converse! Or as we say here, "good work; Dick Head." Excuse my French! Money for billboards but not locally produced product. Typical...

Cross Section Markets - Angel Place Laneway - Sydney!

Yes who said only Melbourne had laneways! We used to have them too until we knocked them all down or built them over. If Sydney is good at only one thing it is certainly good at knocking old stuff down - yes Sydney is kinda the home of the Tall Poppy Syndrome so its nice to see some laneways have survived the onslaught of development and that some have even been re-instated. To help prevent the ever expanding Laneway-Gap between this progressive gap-prone city and more-older (fashioned) and funky cities down south..

But enough about me - this was my first trip to the Cross Section, #CROSSSECTION  laneway markets, and thank god I am not tweeting this or I would be way done already. None the less, it looks like this Designer Fashion Market is an ongoing monthly event something like the Woman's Weekly which is also a monthly and contains all sorts of Fashion info. If none of what I am saying makes any sense at all that's just great because what I really want you to do dear readers is to pop down to the Cross Section Markets in Sydney and see them for yourself. For the musical amongst my readers you will already know that Angel Place is also home to Sydney's BEST recital hall which you can see in the background of the image just below.  That's right, forget the opperra house, this is where the serious music and fashion lovers go... Lucina & Evan at SNO - Artist Style

I met Lucina and Evan last weekend at the SNO 90 exhibition opening. Surprise surprise, they are artists in residence at SNO and will be showing their work in the very next exhibition! Have to say I love their personal style which they brought with themselves all the way from Melbourne; and I am looking forward to seeing their artwork in SNO 91 in a few weeks time.

Weekend Fashion-Camouflage for Guys and Gals..

Yes it was a bit cold over the weekend so we all had our jackets and what-not out to see us through the inclement  nature of the weather; but what I was not expecting was to see a run on camouflage gear. And yes second picture down, I do think that home made so-I-was-told scarf qualifies as camouflage fashion too. The big question is, is this a forerunner for later in the year or just a rainy day coincidence? I suppose only time will tell but it might me nice to see a shift from leopard print to the many different prints of camouflage style.. .

When Summer Turns - It's Back to Black.

Back to Black. Yes, black leather biker jackets, black leggings with black Doc Martins or something similar, and the big black bag; a 60's 'do' up top with long black black hair and a pair of equally retro spectacle frames.. But no matter what Sydney weather seems to want to toss our way right now it IS STILL SUMMER! That's right scream it in caps and then add a splash of funky-hippy tie-dye colour to set off those blacks and let everyone know, Summer is still here.
